Season I "Interview with Sports Executives": Amélie Ouéda-Castéra, President of Rénovons le Sport Français

These are series of short three-question interviews with experts in the sports industry conducted by Gautier Vasseur, Partner at Pedersen & Partners, to gain insights into strategic governance and human capital issues of sporting organisations.

We're pleased to start our first season with Amélie Ouéda-Castéra, President of the association Rénovons le Sport Français, which aims at improving governance methods in French sporting bodies. Amélie also heads the #Paris2024 Audit Committee organising the 2024 Summer Olympics, and seats on the Boards of Carrefour, Eurazeo and Plastic Omnium.

Where do you get your motivation to lead RSF and encourage improvements in the management of the sports governing bodies in France?

I believe in the positive effects of sport on physical and mental wellness, and moral education in civil societies. It is therefore critical that governing bodies of sports federations learn to make better-informed decisions, allowing more people to play more sports and more often.

How do you explain that some sports federations are moving forward faster than others on following your recommendations, and implementing best practices of governance?

The impetus usually comes from the leaders, their vision of the future and their energy in driving changes within their organisations. We can see the benefits for sporting organisations that regularly bring in new talent, ideas and promote diversity to their boardrooms.

From your experience, what practices from the corporate world should be applied in the sporting sector to strengthen its governance efficiencies?

The sporting sector should be applying any practices and operational set-up which aim to improve information and knowledge sharing across the organisation, up to Board level. Professionalisation and access to expertise are key, which also implies the adoption of new incentive models and closer collaboration with the educational sector.
